Last June the first Philippine SEO Contest was published to the general public and the challenge was open to everybody, both SEO mavens and beginners. More than seventy entries were submitted and the competition will end on Sep 29th. The winners will be set by the Google Philippines search website Results Page.

All competitors did everything they can to get it to the top. Both White Hat and Black Hat SEO techniques are involved in the competition and the SEO community. Somehow this competition is a beginning to become and to appear like spamming contest to some and the contestants are now changing their method to stop their site from being at last banned. So what does it take to be on the top spot? Below are the general SEO methodologies almost all of the competitors have done for the 1st month of this competition.

On-Page Optimization – The entry sites are being built to make it as Google friendly as possible. Many are using Word Press as it is straightforward to build and it is thought to be SEO friendly. Link Building – The entry sites are submitted on virtually all forums, blogs and directories out there. Although some sites are totally not related to the entry site, many are still linking their sites there due to the site’s high Google Page Rank and Back links is the Google’s top concern in ranking sites. Articles – Articles are submitted to feeders and article sites.

Many SEO’s agree that article writing helps the site’s ranking a lot and many have submitted many articles solely to get their site spotted. Sadly, black hat methods are being used. Spam blogging, copy sites and other unfriendly systems are being employed to get their site to the top.

I couldn’t blame them because almost all of the SEO competitors have no tangible experience in SEO before this contest and they’re still learning the difference between moral and shady SEO. In the final analysis, only Google-friendly sites will remain on the number one spot and black hatters will probably get banned in Google in the awards night. So what’s the lesson here? Could Time Warner be using Black Hat SEO to Help Search Rankings?

Is it really possible that MarkMonitor, Inc, who call themselves “a world leader in the fast-growing market for online company identity” has been anonymously hiding links for Time Warner? Is this being done on sub domains of timeinc.net to rank high in the search engines? You decide. If you go to the time Inc site and view some of the source code of the pages, you’ll find blunder pages that have links below an image map at the base of the page, links which are concealed from spectators and added to extend the search website ranking of other Time Warner properties. This link-hiding practice is frequently called “Black Hat” SEO. An image map tells the browser the way to display an image.

Some of the pages on timeinc.net have links concealed to spectators next to the image maps. If one perspective the source of sub domains like img.timeinc.net or i.timeinc.net, it is obvious there are 4 links to other Time Warner properties. It should be observed that there are vital subscription pages on other sub domains of timeinc.net. This isn’t a domain that was cast away and has no price for linking.

If MarkMonitor purposefully hid links as it might appear, altruism towards Time appears an improbable motive. There’s an increasingly fine line with what is sufficient and what’s not for SEO.
